Move in day is just around the corner! A little under a week for us second years, and a little under two weeks for the first years. If you’re anything like me, you’re so giddy it makes you feel sick. But I urge you, reign in on that giddy feeling to start packing right this second, even though move out is over a week away, because I have a few tips for you on how you should make the most out of move in day.

Take it Slow

My first tip for making the most of move in day is to take it slow. The day starts at 9 in the morning, and you’ll be at the apartments at 10. You guys have from 10 until 2 to unpack, and even then, you don’t have to get it all done in that moment. Take your time. Make multiple trips home to get what you need, don’t try and fit it all into your car so you only have to make one trip. You’ll forget things that way. Run errands for things like food and all that good stuff. You have a lot of time to unpack, there’s no reason to be done by 12.

Make it Home

Nothing beats being at home. But for the next nine months, you’ll be living in the apartments and there is no better way to make yourself comfortable than to make yourself at home. Bring decorations and knick knacks that you enjoy. Bring posters and pictures that make you smile. Bring things that allow you to unwind and relax in a safe environment. This place is going to be home, so you might as well make it feel like it.

You Don’t Need Everything

Despite wanting to make your room feel like home, I promise you that you don’t need to bring everything from your bedroom at home to your bedroom in the apartment. Bring a few special things, but leave the rest. I made the mistake of bringing just about every knick knack I own, including a Russian stacking doll and about four lucky cat statues, and let me tell you that when it comes to packing that stuff up, it is a pain in the butt! Forgo the lucky cat statues and the stacking doll. All they do is take up space.

Remember: Have Fun

On move in day it is super easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of multiple trips in and out of the building, to and from home, and to the store. You can end up getting stuck in the chaotic mess of moving in, but here is your reminder to ignore that all and just have fun. You’re starting a new journey in your life, don’t let it pass you by. Take control of every moment on move in day and choose joy over frustration. Moving in is a mess, but it can be a fun mess if you allow it to be. Enjoy the fact that everyone is doing the same thing. Take time to make jokes with your roommates about the silly poster you have that is years old, or laugh about how you take a trip home just because you forgot your pair of lucky socks. I promise you, having fun on move in day is the best thing that you can do.

I don’t have much other advice but that. Take it slow, forgo the silly knick knacks, and choose to see the best of move in day. If you follow these tips, then move in day is sure to be a great day. I can’t wait to meet all of you and do life with you!

Many blessings,
